The permitted characters for a username are "Alphanumeric and spacers" that only allows A-Z, 0-9 and spaces. @ is not included so if you entered your email address, it would be reported as having forbidden characters.
This is because it is not a good idea to use email addresses, as they are then public, and anyone using the forum could see your email address. That raises privacy and security concerns.
Some foreign language characters can also cause problems, e.g.; äöü, etc.
